Why replaying is the point

A candidate who mishears one phrase usually loses the question attached to it, and often does not know which phrase it was. Playing a passage a third and fourth time is how that gap gets found. In the examination there are exactly two plays, so the skill being built here is not replaying — it is knowing what to listen for before the recording starts, which is far easier to learn when replaying is free.

Reading the questions first helps more than it sounds like it should. Three options narrow what matters in a sixty-second passage to a handful of details, and a candidate who has read them is listening for something specific rather than trying to remember everything.

Working through the set

Order is a reasonable default but not a rule. The passages vary in kind rather than steadily in difficulty, so a run of three or four in one sitting gives a better sense of the range than working doggedly from the first. Progress is remembered between visits, and any test can be repeated as often as it is useful.

Some questions replace the written options with pictures, and those reward a different habit: scanning the three images before the recording begins, so the passage is heard with something concrete to match against. A candidate who looks at the pictures only after listening has to reconstruct the passage from memory instead.

Questions carry two marks each, with a couple worth one, and every total shown here is added up from the questions themselves rather than assumed.
