PSLE Tamil Composition Mock Exam

Practising a skill and testing it are different exercises, and a child who has only ever written with help does not yet know what they can produce without it. This is the timed version: the same picture prompts, sat the way Paper 1 is actually sat.

The PSLE Tamil composition format

40marks for composition, within Paper 1
20%of the overall PSLE Tamil grade
100word minimum — a floor, not a target

Candidates choose one of the given options, of which the picture series is one.

Marks come from more than word count: whether the story the pictures tell has actually been told, whether events run in a sensible order, whether vocabulary is precise rather than merely correct, and whether the language holds together across the whole piece. Running out of time costs more than any single mistake, because an unfinished story loses marks in every one of those categories at once.

Writing far beyond the minimum is not rewarded on its own, and longer pieces give more opportunities for the language to slip. A controlled composition that finishes properly reads better than a sprawling one that stops mid-event.

What exam mode changes

Everything supportive is switched off. No stage-by-stage walkthrough, no mind-map step, no vocabulary suggestions, no model to glance at while writing. The clock runs from the moment the prompt appears.

Afterwards the model composition and the marking points become available, so the comparison happens where it is useful — after the attempt, not during it.

The habit worth building under timed conditions is spending the first few minutes planning anyway. Candidates who begin writing immediately tend to produce two strong paragraphs and a rushed ending, and the ending is where the story either resolves or does not.
