What Paper 2 asks

Paper 2 is the written paper that is not the composition: comprehension, grammar and language use, spread across a range of question types rather than gathered into one long task. It rewards accuracy in small things — the right case ending, the connective that fits, the word that suits the register — and it exposes a candidate who has learned vocabulary in lists but has never had to choose between two words that both nearly fit.

It is also the paper where marks come back most reliably, because the question types repeat from year to year. A pupil who has met a construction thirty times answers it without stopping to think. One who has met it twice stops to think, gets it right, and loses the time somewhere else in the paper.

How this course is organised

The lessons below work through the paper section by section rather than as a run of whole papers. That ordering is deliberate: a pupil can spend an afternoon on the single construction they keep getting wrong, instead of sitting a complete paper twice in the hope of meeting it again. Each section carries its own exercises, with answers to check against.

Sitting whole papers still matters, and it matters most in the last stretch before the examination — but it is a test of readiness rather than a way of building it, and doing it too early tends to produce a familiar score and no idea what to fix.
